Toronto Section Chair’s Welcome

On behalf of STLE Toronto Section, I would like to welcome you to our 2021-2022 program. Starting last year, STLE Toronto held several education webinars on-line and we will continue until we will have a safe environment for our attendees.

Our focus will be the “cost saving” and / or “manufacturing cost reduction” based on better lubrication, better practices, and / or automated data gathering and processing. These helpful webinars will educate and help the attendees contribute more to the company through these tough times.

I welcome you all on this program and hope to see you all there.

Program

Our technical program over the last few years was based on half day in-person workshops featuring 5-6 speakers. This worked well but with the current concerns about the Covid 19, we are adapting. A short survey determined that the most popular was a talk 30-45 minutes long, on one topic, and held mid-morning. We are also going with live video audio webinars which allows our participants to attend from wherever they are working and there is no time lost for travel. Plus, questions can be submitted in advance or during the presentations. As before we are focusing on technologies that can help save your company resources. This can be better as it might help tribological products last longer, save energy, reduce waste, and/or increase productivity. Win, win, win!

This is a free webinar and Registration fees are voluntary. We suggest $25.00 which will be used to pay for Student Memberships at local universities

Webinar Notice for Tuesday, September 9

LANXESS Hybrid PU-CSC Grease. Innovative technology

that works harder and lasts longer.

Speakers: Wayne Mackwood, Global Head of Detergent and Grease Technology and, Andrew Keane, Global Marketing Analyst, LANXESS Corporation

Abstract: LANXESS has developed a new grease technology, which it is calling Hybrid Polyurea-Calcium Sulfonate Complex product or Hybrid PU-CSC. This grease technology marries the known performance of CSC grease (extreme pressure, antiwear, corrosion resistance, mechanical stability) with that of Polyurea grease technology (oxidation resistance and extended life) in a stable expanded performance grease platform. LANXESS is targeting applications where neither current CSC grease nor standard polyurea grease are ideally suited. This is clearly a sustainable grease technology as it enhances both component life as well as lubricant life. This discussion will describe the new technology, demonstrate its benefits, review some field trial results, and discuss the potential applications that will see benefit from it.

Mr. Wayne Mackwood

Wayne is currently the Global Head of Detergent and Grease Technology for LANXESS, leading a highly skilled, dynamic, and dedicated team of chemists at its West Hill Application Technology Centre. He is a recognized expert in the design, manufacture and use of Calcium Sulfonate Complex Grease and has developed over 150 grease formulations for use in a broad range of applications. He is now also active in the development and introduction of new detergent formulations and technology for lubrication and corrosion inhibition. Wayne has spent the majority of his 25+ year career as a Scientist but has also held roles in marketing and asset management. He has authored more than a dozen technical papers, been quoted in several journal articles, holds two patents, and has given more than 20 presentations at leading conferences and seminars around the world. He has a Masters in Materials Engineering Science, with a focus on Tribology, from the University of Western Ontario. Wayne has been a member of the NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) Board since 2011 and is currently its Secretary. He has also served on STLE Toronto Section Executive for many years, including three times as Chair, and as a Director on the STLE Board of Directors from 2008 – 2011.  In 2019 he was awarded the John A. Bellanti Sr. Memorial Award for meritorious service to the NLGI and the grease industry. 

Dr. Andrew Keane

Andrew joined LANXESS in 2016 shortly after receiving his Ph.D. in Organometallic Chemistry from the University of Maryland – College Park. He was awarded the Anne Wylie College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences dissertation award for his work on converting greenhouse gases to commodity chemicals.  His initial role at LANXESS was in the Process Development Group within the Lubricant Additives business, where he focused on synthetic base oil and aminic antioxidant chemistry.  He was presented with the Innovation Award in 2016 for his work on high viscosity PAO base oil.  During his tenure within the technical group, he particularly enjoyed studying the mechanisms of various lubricant additives, as well as the variety of applications where lubricants are employed.   After three years in R&D, he transferred to the Product Management team. He has held the Global Marketing Analyst position for the last two years supporting the Transportation Additives segment, which includes Antioxidant, Detergent, Grease, and diphenylamine product groups.  Andrew currently serves as the commercial project lead for LANXESS’ Hybrid PU-CSC grease thickener technology.

Hamilton Section

They are having an education day over 2 days (half days) at the beginning of November. Details are not yet available.

PEMAC Asset Management Association of Canada

Canadian leaders in asset management.

For MainTrain 2021, PEMAC has agreed to extend the member rate to STLE members. Use the code: ICML21. This is August 31st – September  24th.  It is a good event for anyone involved in asset management and/or assisting end users.
